EU Approves Controversial Nature Restoration Plan

by | 18 June 2024

EU environment ministers have approved the Nature Restoration Plan, a significant measure aimed at preserving ecosystems, species, and habitats within the 27-nation bloc. The law, part of the EU’s European Green Deal, mandates member states to restore at least 20% of land and sea areas by 2030.

The plan faced considerable opposition, notably from farmers concerned about economic impacts. Austria’s vote played a decisive role, breaking a deadlock. However, Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer contested the legality of Environment Minister Leonore Gewessler’s approval and announced intentions to nullify the vote through legal action.

Despite the controversy, the law was passed, aiming for extensive habitat restoration by 2050, including provisions for wetlands and pollinators.

Environmental groups have hailed the decision, although the law had been somewhat weakened during intense negotiations.
